ROTTERDAM More teen offenses boost town crime statistics BY JUSTIN MASON Gazette Reporter
More reports of juvenile offenses contributed to a 4.2 percent increase in crimes committed in Rotterdam throughout 2007, police officials said Thursday. But while there were more juvenile crimes reported last year, Deputy Chief William Manikas said the number of teenage arrests hasn’t spiked. He cited some youths committing multiple crimes. “They’re committing them in large volumes.” The town witnessed a slight decrease in violent crimes, such as assaults, robberies and forcible rape. The greatest decline was in reports of assault, which dropped to 75, the lowest amount in four years. Overall, there were 66 more crimes committed than in 2006, according to figures provided by the Rotterdam Police. The town saw significant spikes in the crimes of criminal mischief, motor vehicle theft and arson, which saw the greatest statistical increase. There were 13 reported arsons in 2007, more than three times the number reported in the previous four years combined. Manikas said three arsons involved homes and none caused significant damage. Manikas said one youth was suspected in the majority of the arsons in the spring and summer, but police never developed enough evidence to bring charges. The teen was eventually arrested on criminal mischief charges, which brought an end to the arson incidents. Criminal mischief reports spiked from 192 cases in 2006 to 260 cases in 2007. Manikas said a number of these offenses could likely be linked to juveniles. Likewise, Manikas said the increase in vehicle thefts — from 18 cases in 2006 to 30 in 2007 — seemed attributable to several cases where teens went on crime sprees. He said a group of teens stealing from unlocked vehicles was also taking joyrides. “If they found keys in a car, they took it for a joy ride.” Sgt. Thomas Colbert, the Mohonasen High School resource offi - cer, said overall reports of incidents were down on school grounds. Colbert did indicate a rise in petty theft reports. He attributed the increase to a rising number of students bringing valuable electronics to school, such as expensive cell phones and iPod players. “They’re easy to steal and hard to find once they’re stolen,” he said. Reported crime in the town was at its second-highest level over a four year period, The greatest number of crimes was reported in 2004, when Rotterdam police documented 1,717 incidents; the largest spikes that year were in larcenies, criminal mischief and assualts.
Thruway traffic stop leads to drug arrests Friday, February 29, 2008
ROTTERDAM — Two Albany residents were jailed without bail after they were arrested on drug charges following a traffic stop on the New York State Thruway late Thursday night, according to state police. Troopers then found marijuana, crack cocaine and cocaine during a subsequent search of the car, they said. Little was charged with felony fourth-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, misdemeanor seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance and misdemeanor aggravated unlicensed operation, as well as speeding and unlawful possession of marijuana, both violations. A passenger in the car, Sabrina G. Kershaw, 25, was also charged with fourth- and seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance and unlawful possession of marijuana, troopers said. Both were arraigned in Town Court and sent to the Schenectady County jail.
ROTTERDAM More teen offenses boost town crime statistics
I would like to know the statistics on exactly how many teens were actual residents of Rotterdam or if there were from the surrounding areas. Ya know, the crap that overflows from the city?
If it's coming in from the city, than let the poorly managed city leaders pay the overtime for our guys here in Rotterdam.
