The answer: There no stores for anything Downtown. The local took her to Rotterdam Square Mall to find her new shoes. But don't fret-a credit union and beauty college will soon open up. Keep looking for new shoes elsewhere.

SCHENECTADY Cosmetology school to open at 411 State BY MICHAEL LAMENDOLA Gazette Reporter
Paul Mitchell, the School, has received state approval to begin offering classes in cosmetology at 411 State St., a school offi cial announced Thursday. The school will offer its fi rst class for full-time students May 18 and a class for part-time students May 31, said Tracy L. Chesebrough, the school fi nance and operations leader. “We have a list of more than 100 people interested in coming here,” she said. Classes will run Tuesday through Saturday for full-time students and Monday through Thursday for part-time students. Tuition is $9,500, Chesebrough said. It includes the $100 registration fee and the $2,000 kit containing hair dryers, manikin heads and other items students will use for classes. Students can complete the program in about eight months if full time and in about 13 months if part time, Chesebrough said. The school will offer licensed programs in cosmetology and related fields to more than 200 students. It also will offer advanced courses to help current salon employees enhance skills. The school cannot offer financial aid to students until it is accredited, a two-year process, Chesebrough said. However, the school does offers fl exible payment plans. The 411 State St. site will also open a retail store, selling salon products, Monday, Chesebrough said. In July, students will be able to offer hair cuts and manicures to customers. The State Street location is the 10th franchise school owned and operated by Giulio Veglio, a Schenectady native. His brother, Giuseppe Veglio, is dean of the school. There are more than 100 Paul Mitchell schools across the United States. The business is signing a 15-year lease to occupy the basement and fi rst floor of 411 State St. The lease is with the Galesi Group, which purchased the building from former owner Stephen Waite. Waite spent more than $2 million to renovate a former discount department store. He had planned to install a disco in the basement, place retail on the fi rst fl oor and use the second and third fl oors for offices. Waite ran into fi nancial problems trying to close on a construction loan and Galesi ended up purchasing his mortgage. The Metroplex Development Authority, which has been involved in the renovation project for years, is assisting the school with financing. Schenectady has seen its fair share of blah ribbon-cuttings through the years, but Thursday night’s for the Paul Mitchell School on State Street was anything but. To many onlookers, the ceremony had the feel of a Hollywood premiere. It was a glitzy affair complete with a stretch limousine, a red carpet, faux champagne and the appearance of a billionaire. “Wow,” said Susan Savage, chairwoman of the Schenectady County Legislature, a keynote speaker at the grand opening. “We have not had a day like this in Schenectady before.” The school at 411 State St. is the first Paul Mitchell franchise to open in upstate and the 10th to open under the ownership of Giulio Veglio, a Schenectady native. The school is state-approved to offer a 1,000-hour program leading to a license in cosmetology. The school went all out for the event, according to Tracy Chesebrough, the school’s fi nancial officer and event coordinator. “We went a little over the top.” Chesebrough said the grand opening marked Veglio’s homecoming and the gathering of his family, including his mother and brother, Dr. Giuseppe Veglio, who is dean of the school. The guest of honor was John Paul DeJoria, CEO and chairman of Jean Paul Mitchell Systems, of which the school is part. DeJoria is ranked 212th on the Forbes’ list of world billionaires, with a net worth of $4 billion. DeJoria arrived in a stretch limousine to the applause of more than 50 onlookers, most of them students of four different Paul Mitchell schools, including the State Street school.
