Mohonasen’s capital project well under way
Fine arts wing being added; building updates also included

    The staccato sound of jackhammers has supplanted the chatter of students at Mohonasen’s campus off Curry Road.
    Construction crews have also moved in on the Pinewood Intermediate and Bradt Primary schools. In fact, there aren’t many areas of the district that aren’t facing extensive renovations this summer, as Mohonasen’s $21.9 million capital project gets under way.
    Workers have erected the steal I-beam skeleton for a building that will one day serve as the district’s new fine arts wing at the high school. Workers also have torn down most of the building’s drop ceilings, revealing a twisted maze of wires and pipes winding through the halls.
    Nearby at Draper Middle School, asbestos abatement is under way in a number of classrooms. And many of the building’s aluminum window awnings have been stripped to their framing.
    In less than two months, district officials are hoping to have the bulk of Mohonasen’s campus back in working order. But in the meantime, those few summer groups still utilizing the campus could be in for a rough haul as they navigate closed entrances, relocated offi ces and a wide variety of construction equipment.
    “This summer, we will complete most of what was planned for the project, meaning there is a lot of work to do in just a few short months,” said Joseph Mayo, the district’s director of facilities.
