Well, it was nice for a while, but lately Rotterdam has not been the "Nice place to live" as is advertised.  No matter  how much you volunteer or participate, there seems to be this mentality that unless you were born and bread here, you never really fit in.  See ya Rotterdam.

And even if you have lived here all your life, some people pretend that you "just moved here" of you haven't spent your time hanging/drinking with the "people in the know." I am sorry you feel that way about being shut out. There are many people here that wouldn't do that to you, but you apparently have felt treated that way.

pdh25....Many people feel the same way...they are also a bunch of high class wanna bee's.....move on to where the people are more friendly, you could move to the Western end...very nice

I have to disagree with you. Rotterdam really is a nice place to live. People are, for the most part, very friendly. As far as the mentality of being born and bread here is nonsense. That generation is dying out. HOWEVER....it is clicky to a point....but isn't every town or municipality? And what part of this town do you not fit in to? It's about as simple of living as you can get. It truly is 'small town' living.

Yall don't know "small town" living, trust me.  When neighbors make dinner for you on "moving in" day, when others bring flowers, brownies, cookies or just stop by with a pitcher of sweet/iced tea - just to say "hi" (hey) - THAT'S small town - that's community.  I've never seen that in Rotterdam, and I've lived there most all my life - till recently.

I have to agree with MT.  I never found it to be cordial and I have been here 35 years.  However, I have always done business in the town and supported the small businesses here.  There are six  
houses  on my street that are the original folks.  The rest are new neighbors.  Years ago we always welcomed the stranger in but now we don't even know who moved in or when.  I, too, will move out in a year.  Probaly will continue to do business here but will be glad to finally move out.  Sorry pdh has had
that experience.

I was born and grew up in latham.. latham (and clifton park) are really the "jewels" of the capital district.

Latham and clifton park are really not welcoming to new people.. sorry.. heck the family in Extreme home makeover sold there house due to community pressure of having a special needs kid there with aids..

I think people don't realize in suburbia in upstate ny, people are defensive.. they see new people and automatically feel they are on there property, in there teritoriy, and become territorial..

As new people move in those "like me" who are the new people, get a little more "seniority" and those who move in 5 years from now on my block will be the new people.. it's just the way of things..

No offense.. i don't need to be best friends with those around me.. but i'm a bit standoffish by personality... as long as we are polite I'm happy..   I just need a safe place to raise my kid.

And may I just add, that 'yes' neighborhoods and communities are clearly different today. Everyone works. Kids have day care and baby sitters. Kids don't play outside like they use to. It's computers and video games. Kids have 'play dates' now. There are more schoolfunctions than there use to be. Life is busy and not so simple anymore. And everything is expensive!

So I really don't think it is an issue of unfriendly people in that sense. There just is no more time left in the day for chit chat and that cup of coffee or bottle of beer with your neighbor. IMHO

We are one of the really lucky familys.. my mother in law babysits, and my wife works in one giant shift.. so it's either grandma, the wife, or myself with my kid.. 9 months and haven't needed one baby sitter.. I honestly think the fact everyone has to work contributes greatly to the decline of things, kids need as much influence from family sources as possible (it's just life unfortunately) but yeah i think you are right on your opinion bumble.

Crap 9 month, and the other day she was leaning in her chair to look around me to see the t.v. i was standing in front of... *sigh*

If you think Rotterdam is "small town" living, you really need to get out beyond the Rotterdam town line a little more.  I grew up around small towns and I assure you, Rotterdam does not come close to it.  Small town living is where you help your neighbor because you actually want to, not because you feel obligated to or think you will get something out of it.  It is where kids play without worrying about "Old Mr. Jones" coming out and yelling at them for walking on his lawn.  It is where folks wave and say hi, even if they are rushing from this or that function.  It is where little Jimmy doesn't have to worry about his neighbor little Timmy smacking him and then running to his mommy when he gets smacked back.      

I don't think that's small town living, i think that's time travel.
