Savage mulling run for a state position

First published in print: Tuesday, January 12, 2010

Schenectady County Legislature Chairwoman Susan Savage is considering a run for state office, eyeing both the long-held seats of Republicans state Sen. Hugh Farley and Assemblyman Jim Tedisco.

"I would like to be wherever I will make the biggest difference for my community. It could be in the Senate or the Assembly," said Savage, a Democrat who lives in Niskayuna, adding that she'll announce her intentions in about a month.
Savage is being courted by county Democrats as their strongest candidate for a state office this year. Tedisco's seat is likely the more enticing of the two because of his loss in the Republican-heavy 20th Congressional District race last year to political newcomer Scott Murphy. Farley, a Niskayuna resident, is expected to run again this fall in the 44th Senate District for his 18th two-year term.

Tedisco, who lives in Glenville and has held his 110th district seat since 1983, would not confirm if he'll run for re-election. "There's a time for campaigning and a time for elections and then there's a time for governing and being a public servant," Tedisco said before the Assembly went into session Monday afternoon.

If Savage enters the election, she'll likely have to quit her job as director of intergovernmental affairs at the state Office of Real Property Services. Savage, a mother of nine, first entered the political arena when she was elected to the County Legislature in 1997 and became chairwoman in 2004. With the recent switch of Republican Legislator Angelo Santabarbara to the Democratic side, the Democrats now have a 13-2 majority in the County Legislature.

"I have a good record of bringing change to Schenectady County and there certainly is a need for change in the state Legislature. I have to consider it," she said.

I don't know about the biggest difference but the best difference for the community would be if she stayed home.

Can she really afford the pay cut to "serve the people" in the Assembly?

Because of pathetic County REP "leadership"-Ms. Savage ran basically unopposed (her opponent fled for St Lawrance County). Now she is free to run against Mr. "Term Limits" Jimmy Tedisco.

The only news from the secret REP "executive" meeting was that Jimmy announced he will run again for Assembly-{15th term!} Nobody said nuthin-nobody said he should move up to State Senate or retire and open this up for new candidates.

Times Union Reporter Lauren Stanforth omitted an important point regarding Savage's potential run for state elected office.
I understand that Savage's husband is Steven Weingarten is a lobbyist to the New York State government.  This would appear
to me to present a serious conflict of interest IMHO.

Will the residents send Savage to the state government where her husband's firm lobbies on behalf of special interest groups?

Nobody cared when she "ran" the County.

This is an opportunity for Tea Party Patriots/NNTP/CONS to unite and run a 3rd Party candidate against Jimmy and Susan. Great choice for the sheeple?-A 14 term incumbent who talks about term limits and a big tax and spender who would vote with Silver. Have heard rumors of a possible Tea Party Patriot or REP primary.

If elected to one of these positions.....is it legal that suzie's husband still remain a partner for a lobbyist group?????? Actually, has it been legal all along?

No MT Suzie will run and win because the Reps have no leadership.  I would bet Reps will support her regardless of which seat she runs for.  Tedisco is, IMHO, finished.  He is having a very hard time in the Assembly.  He's turned into Rodney Dangerfield "just can't get any respect."  With Buchanan at the wheel that can only get worse.

Except for reps supporting suzie, which I highly doubt...She'll get all the special interest (union votes).....I agree with the rest of your post.

Sorry Bumble--I said that because two Nisky folks (Reps) told me today they would support Suzy Q because Tom is still at the helm.

Jimmy couldn't even decide if he is for or against Obama's horrible stimulus flop. He looked like a fool waffling on this key issue. Sue Savage can raise major bucks-she will have functioning political committees behind her. REPS have completely imploded in Niskayuna and the City.

support them or their ideas???? because really to SUPPORT a politician just means to vote for them and work on their campaign
or talk their ideas up.....

other than the 'sincere' statement, why?
