Henry, you are being obtuse and you know it. Polls consistently indicate that atheists are the most distrusted and disliked minority group in the US. Polls also indicate that the public will not vote for an atheist based on their lack of religion alone. There are states that have tried to create laws that would ban atheists from holding public office. Job discrimination does occur to atheists--and it shouldn't matter but in the same way that it shouldn't matter if someone is black or Muslim or female, but job discrimination is well documented for those groups as well. Creationism is taught or pushed in many schools despite not being supported by the science community. Evolution isn't even taught properly even in many schools that do not support creationism. This lack of understanding of evolution has had an effect on this county's ability to produce scientists in many fields--biology, virology, stem cell research, geology, etc. it is directly related to religious influences in the schools.

Religion, particularly Christianity, is pervasive in just about every aspect of this country.

Short article on 11 things atheists can't do.

http://m.huffpost.com/us/entry/4413593

Note, number 1 is live. In some countries in this world being an atheist is a death sentence. This alone is a reseaon for someone to "dedicate their lives" to defending non-belief. And yes, people of religion have had to deal with this most severe level of discrimination as well.

Good morning Parent, I read your link and really wasn't to impressed, at least you agreed that religious people also faced some of the offenses in other countries like death. Some of the other examples were really single cases and not wide spread, example a teacher being fired for being atheist at a school. You need to realize this was not a public school it was a private CATHOLIC school and they have every right to fire her, now if it was at a public school I would defend her. This case caught my eye because a teacher was fired in PA for wearing a cross around her neck at a public school, I'm sure you remember that case.

Running for office- Atheist could run for office but it doesn't mean the public needs to like it, every part of your life is under scrutiny when running and most voters usually vote for those who are closest to their own belief. Since America is still overwhelmingly religious atheist have a long way to go, think of it this way do you think a Muslim will ever become president, not in our lifetime for obvious reasons.

Volunteering- Read the story again, they were denied helping at this soup kitchen, which I'm guessing was a religious organized group, however they were allowed to set up shop across the street and do exactly what they said they were denied to do. Point being you do not have a right to others private property, what they say goes just like private schools and private clubs like the boy scouts. I should add that denying them from helping was wrong in my opinion, especially when they were there to help the less fortunate. Thankfully they continued on and helped some 300 people.

Jobs- Have you parent ever been asked before applying for a job what religion you were? I take this issue as I do with private schools, if it is a private business I believe they have the right to ask just like stores are allowed not to offer service to those not wearing shoes or shirts. Sounds crappy yes but here is the flip side to that, that business would lose business and possibly good employees, and in todays America that business might not be around for very long once they played that card. Basically it is not in their best interest to push away customers.

Advertising- Atheist have every right to advertise their belief, however like before they don't have a right to force privately owned companies to spread those beliefs. The case that was presented in the article fails to mention that the advertising billboard company was privately owned. Now Atheist have every right to start up their own billboard company, buy or rent land and post as many advertising pieces as they want, there was no loss of rights here.

I could tear apart that whole list but what I wrote summed up most of it, people of all races, religions, sexes, backgrounds need to understand what their rights are and what are not rights.

again, you are being purposely obtuse.

A privately owned company can not refuse serve to people based on religious beliefs. Period. It is illegal.

And each time you defend your argument you move the goal posts. You say it doesn't effect jobs and when you're shown how it does you decide that it's ok that affects certain job. Private jobs, or ones based on elections. So what are examples you would accept? My guess is none. My guess is that you don't want to accept anything that you are being shown, or bothering to actually read or listen to the experiences of atheists throughout the country because you do value their lives, their views, or their experiences.

Did you support A&E's suspension of Phil Robertson from Duck Dynasty when he was suspended for voicing his religious beliefs?  Was that suspension illegal?  Was he being publically persecuted because of how he thinks and because his moral beliefs come from a bible?

For some on these boards, being obtuse is an avocation and desired trait. For awhile I thought it was actually a requirement for posting here.

I'm not privy to what contacts A&E had with him so I don't know if he was in any violation that could be supported by a suspension. In general I say that no, someone shouldn't be suspended or fired for moral beliefs that come from their religion (unless said expression leads to direct harm of others or violate other's rights, then it does get into a more sticky situation and may warrent some type of action).   I have heard Duck Dynasty lost 50% of their viewership after that fiasco. I've only seen the show once and don't understand the appeal. It seemed entirely scripted with awful acting to me, but maybe I just saw an off episode? Personally not into the hicksplotation genere myself.

LMAO!  FUNNY!

When people take such an absolutist position, being obtuse is just a way to dismantle the absolute position.  I personally believe turning atheists into some sort of victim class is a stretch.

Atheist share most of the religious moral beliefs on things such as murder, stealing,  incest, and rape to name a few. The two major beliefs they disagree on is abortion and homosexuality.  Whether somebody believes in a god or not isn't really the issue.  It's controlling social morality and the laws that govern them.

I rest my case.

Boohoo many people like to play the victim and for some they play the Atheist card, not one thing on your list you posted denied anyone their rights in this country not one. There is no right which makes people have to accept you or your lifestyle and that is the fact you and others need to understand if you want to go forward in life. If the boy scouts don't accept you create your own scout club, if a private school doesn't want you start a private atheist school, if you want to post billboards create a company and post them, nothing hard about understanding that.

why would an atheist apply at a christian/muslim/jewish company.....work somewhere else

I don't have a religion and I don't expect anyone to defend me....I will not defend any religion,,,,just the person....but to
'move in' to an area that you don't agree with and then expect everyone to change for you is wrong....

I don't care what religion an elected leader is....they just can't talk about it...it's just that personal...they shouldn't need mob
rule to get elected....it's not about their religion----EVER......

I don't need to see the president or any other elected figure sitting in a mosque/church/synagoge etc.....

I don't need to see myself reflected in the elected......the elected need to see everyone. this isn't hollywood/america idol....

...you are a product of your environment, your environment is a product of your priorities, your priorities are a product of you......

The replacement of morality and conscience with law produces a deadly paradox.

Grew up a hick, from a family of hicks. These tv shows are exploiting rural culture and roots and making them look like ignorant morons. Some of course are, but it should have to be explained that of course they all aren't. These shows are not marketed and designed to "lift" these people or their regions up. They are being made fun of. I'm not into making fun of people and portraying them as idiots.
